"Programming languages research and design is like fashion design." Love this. I've had a TODO note on my desk for weeks to start reading more about the fashion industry for exactly this reason. I know little about it and yet much of tech seems more like fashion than engineering

I come from a graphic design and art background, and would absolutely consider programming to be a creative discipline. We can definitely learn a bunch from looking at art, fashion, design, etc. for ideas on what we could do better.

For sure. I'm also fascinated at how most of us making software would say that our choices are metrics driven, logical. But much of what is driving choices is more similar to what happens in fashion. That so many software ppl don't follow fashion also means we can't see this.
