Is package management/installation/compatibility issues the hardest part of programming or am I just a noob?

Heh sounds like python... There are these conda, pip, virtualenv things, the fact that there are so many of those says something.

I'm trying to install Idris actually...and failing.

building anything in haskell is nightmare-difficulty. seemingly random, difficult to diagnose errors in all levels of the toolchain, dependency version resolution errors, language level compatability errors and more seem widespread.

the most competent coders i know generally loathe building anything in haskell or have abandoned it entirely. don't beat yourself up about it 😥

This is one of the reasons I mainly build stuff in Rust, as much as I long for the higher level abstractions of Haskell. Really wish they could solve some of this stuff (eg. compatibility breakages in base, and allowing multiple library versions to be used at the same time). 😥
