I got far more out of the art and design history courses I did as part of a half-finished graphic design degree (long story) in my career as a programmer than I have from the practical job training stuff they were doing in that computer science program.

The context here for those outside Australia: twitter.com/Jo_Tovey/statu - university in Australia has become synonymous with job training, and TAFE (technical schools) have been extremely undervalued (in the eyes of employers and the public) and underfunded.

The Coalition will double university fees for some future arts students, and also raise them for commerce and law, to fund an expansion of 39,000 places and cheaper degrees for those who study in-demand courses such as teaching, nursing. Via @Paul_Karp theguardian.com/australia-news
