I am canadian so I grew up with "colour" but I've spent years practicing using "color" in code because idk I guess someone told me that was a good idea. Now I'm using a library that uses "colour" and it's throwing me off so much 😭

not quite the same but there's a documented linguistic phenomenon where Canadian children use a lot more American spellings, but as teenagers they slowly switch over, not as something that is taught but rather as a subconscious counterculture/"fuck america" thing

Weird alternative option is both. My brain has registered route as two words with alternate pronunciations. - rowt: exclusively computer networking related - root: everything else, e.g routes
