These would definitely trip up folks if they weren't careful, and I assume there's many people constantly tripping over the same thing.

Yeah, going solo is _really_ hard going. Seems to take, like, ten times longer do get anywhere. At times like these I'm really thankful for twitter at the very least!

another good approach to joining IRC these days is via the matrix.org Freenode gateway. for whatever that's worth.

Oh cool! Yeah I already use that so this would be helpful. Will have to figure out: "Reason: IRC error on ##dependent: err_needreggednick" though 🤔
oh yeah that means that you need to log into Freenode nickserv before trying to join. if you don't have a Freenode account you need to create one. that's best done on a normal IRC client the first time.

use a password that isn't used for anything else, so that you won't mind giving it to the matrix bridge so it can log in for you in future
