As a person working in programming languages at a small business in Australia, I've been very thankful for the recorded talks that the PL research community has been working hard to put online these past few years, and their commitment to pushing for open access.

A quick reminder to academics missing out on conferences due to coronavirus that this is what many contingent, parent, disabled, non-funded academics experience each year. In-person conferences can be beneficial but are consistently exclusionary and propagate academic inequality.

I'm far from disadvantaged, but I do miss out on valuable in-person meetings. I really feel for those academics whose jobs depend on the stuff that isn't available online. For me it's an inconvenience in my job - for them it's a massive exclusionary barrier to their career.

I've got no idea what the solution is, but I'm hopeful that the PL research community can figure it out! The push for reducing the carbon footprint has been a great one, not just for the environment, but also for inclusion and equality.
