a lot of the benefits of an SSA intermediate representation ive read about seem to revolve around imperative languages. do functional languages -- that use let bindings and are already in an SSA form as a result -- still benefit?

AFAIK, you often use either CPS or ANF for dealing with closures. This can then be translated to SSA.
