In the UK you vote for Prime Minister. It's a job. Nobody likes the person who does it much. OTOH in the US you vote for the Savior of the Universe. The future of humanity hangs in the balance. So of course people take very seriously. They even have bumper stickers and hats.

They are elected - they are elected by the government. And the people vote for that government. I mean, effectively people think they are voting ‘for the prime minister’, but it’s hard to say whether this is a fault of the system, or cultural colonisation by the US.
