So frustrating to email admissions people and get told not to bother applying :(

It's easier for many people to learn at universities, but much can also be learned outside them.

I've had great success at that, in fact. Everywhere else wants to make some kind of short term commodity though, which isnt conducive to serious thinking...

I don’t have an undergrad degree, but I’m slowly getting my head around this stuff. It is possible, and very rewarding! A bunch of people are learning on the Pikelet gitter channel too. If you’re ever interested, feel free to drop by! 🙂

Amazed that you don't have an undergraduate degree, . Did you drop out?
BTW, there's also ##dependent and ##type-theory on Freenode — and #idris, #agda, #coq and probably others of interest.

Yeah, dropped out. I found undergrad an annoying slog - and they weren’t teaching CS, more last decade’s software engineering, where as I was hoping to get a solid foundation in theory. Also didn’t help that I wasn’t aware at the time that I might have ADD.

Partly was my fault for not doing enough research into the actual content of the course work before I applied. I don’t regret it (helped me get internships), but I could have got more value out of the experience.

I did part of a graphic design course several years before, which was much more valuable from a theory perspective and helps me in CS, but had trouble due to attention problems. Now I know about them it might be easier, but I’d much rather be doing research.

Thankfully I’m now lucky enough to be able to work on dependent type systems and programming languages in my day job. 😍
Heh! Yeah, had to spend some painful years doing Rails web dev before that opportunity came along though. Was good though because I learned a bunch of software engineering techniques that are actually really useful.
