It's easier for many people to learn at universities, but much can also be learned outside them.

I've had great success at that, in fact. Everywhere else wants to make some kind of short term commodity though, which isnt conducive to serious thinking...

Yeah, dropped out. I found undergrad an annoying slog - and they weren’t teaching CS, more last decade’s software engineering, where as I was hoping to get a solid foundation in theory. Also didn’t help that I wasn’t aware at the time that I might have ADD.
Partly was my fault for not doing enough research into the actual content of the course work before I applied. I don’t regret it (helped me get internships), but I could have got more value out of the experience.

I did part of a graphic design course several years before, which was much more valuable from a theory perspective and helps me in CS, but had trouble due to attention problems. Now I know about them it might be easier, but I’d much rather be doing research.
