In art, design, programming and comp sci, it's mainly been a process of looking at creators I whose work I like, then tracking down who/what influenced those creators. Then trying to emulate a combination of that stuff in my own work. Eventually it seeps in.

Having side-interests is also handy if you want to develop a unique sense of taste, because often you'll find certain similarities and recurring patterns that interest you across fields.
