Pressuring developers to work overtime is unequivocally one of the biggest problems in the software industry. But… I can't shake the feeling when I see others signal to novice developers that they don't need to practice outside their 40 hours a week will set them up for failure

I think this is a failure of most software companies. They do not provide _any_ time for learning and development during hours. This forces novices to study outside of those hours, or to struggle.

I'm so grateful my job is now basically 100% learning how to solve interesting, hard problems to a high standard of quality, with little micromanagement. I feel like I've leveled up leaps and bounds in my last year, rather than the small amounts I managed to fit in after hours.

Part of it is finding a company that is willing to be a patron for your current interests, but finding that fit is very hard if you don't have the good fortune to be able to spend time exploring out-of-hours. My moonlighting paid off in the end, but not all have that luxury.
