Haskell Programming From First Principles is a nice intro to typed functional programming, even for those who haven't programmed before: haskellbook.com

Would very much recommend juniors spend some time learning a language like Haskell - it'll do wonders for improving the way you design programs, and will make it much easier to pick up languages like Swift, Scala, Reason, Rust, Elm, etc. in the future. ๐๐

Very much help! Why would this make them cry?

I dunno, that's exactly the myth that the book is dispelling! They do an excellent job of working up from a simple foundation. The hardest things for juniors to do who were learning it would be to survive all the senior developers claiming that the language was too hard for them!
