Microsoft is investing in Git, VSCode, Electron, Github, Bash-on-Windows. Things that decentralize and help prevent lock-in. Apple is taking away the only universal cross platform graphics system (OpenGL), locking developers into Metal, and taking away our escape keys.

Webkit would most likely be doing something similar internally in the future. Will be interesting what the other browser engines will have to do to maintain WebGL compatibility on macOS...

Hopefully Apple makes this part of WebKit official supported as a gesture of good will. I mean we live in a world where Microsoft acquired github. Anything can happen.

From what I hear it was a miracle of chance that we even ended up with a standardized cross platform graphics API that become somewhat popular. To expect it to happen a second time when everyone is incentivized against it might be too optimistic.

I’m not sure I buy this. LLDB powers a huge number of projects and Apple’s sponsorship is a huge reason why. Same with WebKit/Chromium (forked from WebKit). Swift has been completely open development since it was announced. Apple is making serious contributions.

And it’s not like MS has spent ANY time trying to build a cross platform replacement for OpenGL, they got people locked into DirectX, which isn’t exactly open.
