I'm proud to see 's talk on stateful serverless programming models from my track included in 's best talks of 2019. I believe this programming model will become ubiquitous. It is a great talk and it was a pleasure to meet Chris and hear about his work.

The longer the time frame for results, the less you need intensity and the more you need consistency.

Sometimes my kid wails that he needs help with Legos. My inclination was to consult on structure, add pieces. This always made him cry. I finally figured out that the "help" he needs is for me to sit quietly next to him while he figures it out. And isn't that what we all want?

The things is, shame is primal—it is going to be there whether we see it or not. The key is if we can be vulnerable enough to recognize the shame and sit with it, without it being diffused by attacking oneself, attacking the other, withdrawal, or avoidance.

I think it is a great idea for a team to write a how-we-work manifesto, exploring, aligning, and making the team's values explicit in the process. It is also great for sharing with people new to the team, or interested in joining the team.

I've worked on a lot of hard distributed-systems problems, but providing a consistent view of dynamic pricing across thousands of entities may be the hardest. The eventual consistency is inevitable, but it is unforgiving.

I'm reminded this week: quorum-based architectures are difficult and risky to patch/upgrade, since the only option, in most cases, is in-place. Shared-nothing architectures provide more options: canary, rolling, blue/green, scale-up/down, etc.

No blog this month. I take January off mainly because I can't keep up, but also so my blog goes "up to eleven". Last month's article was on replication trade-offs in systems like Kafka and Pulsar. Next month will be an exercise for exploring our values as individuals and teams.

A really fantastic talk by not just about a very nice technique called „Quality Views“ but also about visualizing and communicating data, quality in software systems in general, thinking fast and slow, dealing with technical dept, ...
