It is 100% this and ALSO people take fewer PTO days if they are unlimited than if they have some specific number they know they can take. It is a grift.https://twitter.com/chadloder/status/1081703710294589441 …

Salary negotiation pro-tip: “unlimited vacation” is a way for companies to avoid accruing paid vacation hours for their employees. Don’t settle for “it’s up to your manager and the team” - how strange it would sound for companies to say that about salary or health insurance.

If you have "unlimited" vacation, try telling your boss you're taking 3 months off.

The only actual data I've been able to find on how many days they actually take off is anecdata from a single company who said that on average employees take the same number of days off with unlimited vs limited PTO in this non-scientific article (https://www.fastcompany.com/3052926/we-offered-unlimited-vacation-for-one-year-heres-what-we-learned …)

In this article, which is obviously a propaganda piece designed to sell the concept of unlimited vacation, they basically admit that employees really like the policy even though it confers no actual benefit. Yes, that's how the con works.

Weird how no one is getting grants to research the actual effects of unlimited PTO on the workers eh?

Also important is the way they use alienation of the workers from each other to police the actual use of the policy. "If you take more days off the other workers will be mad at you." No my dude they will start doing it too.https://twitter.com/dreid/status/1081992033886121984 …

My favorite is when they tell me it's "unlimited" but that I should "be respectful" of my coworkers by "using it appropriately".

Apparently when they have so much power they don't even need to con you into liking it they just call it "non-accrued" lmaohttps://twitter.com/nota_bennett/status/1082000214242676737 …

We have “non-accrued” vacation at work (which is really what most unlimited policies are) and the managers mostly hate it because it’s super easy for people to think “oh unlimited” and then have a bad time.

The secret to "unlimited vacation" is that there *IS* a number, but you are not allowed to know what it is and if you exceed the number you will be punished for it.https://twitter.com/nota_bennett/status/1082000871376842752 …

Asking for a bunch of vacation and then being disappointed or upset when they either don’t get it or (more likely) the response is “ah, okay, here’s the real policy, we can do that much off but it won’t be paid and it’s likely to have an impact on your performance review.”

I've heard from a few people who like this policy, and I can't attribute their beliefs entirely to false consciousness, and I think (as @sarahmei kindly pointed out) that this critique would be made stronger by considering both sides, so let's try to do that.

The only reason I hate traditional accrued time is that it buckets Vacation and Sick time together. Sick kid? Congrats, you now don’t get to spend that day with them when they aren’t sick later. It’s -brutal- to see days slip away like that to work.
