Consider: millions of years ago our antecedents gave a massive sacrifice of their left hemisphere. We lost a tremendous amount of short term memory and replaced it with Broca’s, Wernicke & the phonological loop. But why? So we can—talk. Thus chimpanzees can do this—we can’t:pic.twitter.com/CDznxg37p1

Brad, I want to thank you for all the exchanges here. A pleasure to meet you and discover the work of your lab. I do have a question. You mention the professor said there was no training needed for the chimpanzees. You feel this is incorrect. Do you feel he is misstating truth?
-
Thanks for asking Brian and I appreciate communicating with you as well. This has been a very interesting exchange. I think he and I disagree about what constitutes "training". Obviously the monkeys must be taught what digits are and how to perform the task. >

Hey Brad, you've probably seen this http://www.replicatedtypo.com/category/chimpchallenge …
@replicatedtypo@aucksAdventures - are the latest data available somewhere? -
Nope I haven't, that's interesting. looks like the game is down though.

Likewise—thanks for the contact info,
@BrianRoemmele. However, your tweet said the 2010 study had been "discredited", which is a pretty strong statement. For such a claim it would be nice to be able to point to a specific reference, if you have one. -
I’m much more worried that 1) Matsuzawa 2013 did NOT have this figure, but
@BrianRoemmele cites it as such. As far as I can tell it’s not by Matsuzawa 2) Matsuzawa 2013 does not at all advance a Wernicke/Broca replacement theory, but a prefrontal WM development discussionpic.twitter.com/Vy5TxM4fo4

good for you for asking. No training? hahahaha.

Claudio, Do you feel the professor of Kyoto University and the director of primate research, a colleague of yours—is misstating the truth? I want to give you and others here avenue—as some may take your response incorrectly. It would be wonderful for you to post it for clarity.

Training to learn how to sequence the numbers is obviously necessary, but that does not discredit the claim that no training is necessary for the chimps to perform the memory feat.
-
But it does though. The experience in learning the sequence builds the skill that the chimps use to perform the task.
