The current fuel economy rules are part of the problem. They're calculated based on vehicle footprint, so larger vehicles are held to lower standards. It ends up giving automakers an incentive to build and invest in marketing larger vehicles.

The automobile industry always claims they give customers what they want. At the same time, they spend millions of dollars on ads making it look like average Americans spend our daily commutes driving the Jeep roads of Moab.

Agreed. Industry knew they had higher margins on SUVs and pushed ad campaigns accordingly – and by consequence made "econo boxes" look puny, undesirable, and vulnerable to the point where they stopped making small cars at all.
