As one who has dropped laptops off to be repaired several times, I’ve never been asked to pay for the services unti AFTER the work was done. That held true no matter where I took the laptops.
Yes, that might be so, but I'm quite sure you've probably left your name, contact information for when the work was finished, and had an expectation they weren't going to spend who knows how many hours perusing your data.

what does having a medical condition have to do with it? Computer places dont ask for pay till the end because it's based on labor hours I can barely remember what ordered for lunch last week let alone who brought in some computers a year ago for the business I work everyday?
