The climate crisis is the biggest risk facing our city – confronting it must be at the center of our recovery. Today I’m releasing my comprehensive plan to focus the Comptroller’s office on mitigating climate crisis and building a more resilient city. https://www.landerfornyc.com/climate pic.twitter.com/YYw5BnSnt4

As @AlexCKaufman reports, our plan lays out steps to divest the city’s pension funds of fossil fuels, expand public financing for clean infrastructure and create a new auditing department to hold city agencies and companies accountable to climate goals.https://www.huffpost.com/entry/nyc-election-climate_n_5f919cf7c5b66d4a0dbcfc83 …

One grim thing we have learned from the COVID-19 pandemic is just how deadly it can be when we fail to prepare for a crisis.  This week, we are remembering the devastation of Hurricane Sandy as we grapple with an ongoing pandemic that exacerbates racial and economic inequity.

The job of the Comptroller is to take the long-term view on our city, evaluate risk, and prepare us for future crises. Facing the climate crisis offers is our best bet to recover strongly from the COVID-19 economic crisis and build a more just, equitable, and resilient city.

Utilities cannot be swayed with shareholder engagement. Their business model fundamentally depends on expanding as much gas infrastructure as possible. Will you commit to also divest the pensions from private utilities like National Grid, and fight for #PublicPower instead?

State law (CLCPA) will require dramatic reduction in gas use over 30 years (before 2050), but gas utility assets' cost recovery extends to 85+ years. The result will be massive amounts of stranded assets. This is a brewing financial crisis costing many billions of dollars.
