I saw this thing and a positive review just before I eventually decided to get a refurb X1 Carbon. I still think this may be the right choice for a more primary machine but this is now the second positive impression from a known-reliable narrator. Now extra curious about this.

ahhh usb-pd is so clutch for me these days but still nice to see some great

Why do you say USB-C is a disaster?

USB-C the plug is used for USB2, USB3-1, USB3-2, DP1.2, and TB3. Each one of those can have a different cable (with one of two different wattage ratings), but all the cables look the same. So many incompatible uses for one plug.
