The person on the stage or the person who wrote that book isn’t better than you. They just took a shot. Don’t be afraid to take yours and share your knowledge. And don’t listen to anyone who tells you you’re not good enough. Especially the voice in your head. It’s a jerk.

Oh! Be wary of over indexing technical skills to the exclusion of more people related ones at all levels of org. If you want to give opportunities for growth and have an internal management pipeline be sure to interview for people skills when hiring individual contributors.

Most people never, ever forget the first person to give them a sizable advance on their own self-confidence — there's no greater security in life than being a serial enabler of wonderful young people

Massively underestimated: The “cost” of people coming to work knowing things are broken & fearing the next thing breaking. This holds for usability issues, “bugs”, “quality”, elephants in the room, strategy misalignment...anything. The drag and dissonance is extremely costly.

Conflicted. I don’t like being tracked. But..... I’d rather see ads for cool synthesizers and other music things instead of the latest drug with one benefit and 20 types of cancer it can give me for a symptom I don’t have.https://twitter.com/dhh/status/1223261125090824192 …

A lot of people have been talking about if cell phones should be banned from classrooms in K-12/higher ed, saying they make learning impossible As a student with low vision, my cell phone actually helps make learning possible thanks to assistive technology Here's how (

We need to compile to static content. Doing so from arbitrary JS is probably a silly idea, and there is probably a middle-ground that gives most of the DX familiarity of "components" but allows for complete static analysis.

Unpopular opinion: React is the wrong tool for building content websites (blogs, marketing sites, documentation, etc.) today. SSR is not good enough. You end up downloading the content twice: once in the HTML, and again in the JS for hydration. How did this become so common?

Couple days ago I said words like "easy" and "simple" aren't good for motivating learners. Check out my article on

Today I had the privilege of talking to Sauk Prairie High School Comp Sci students about "Succeeding in an IT career". What an honor. At the end I gave away two copies of "Exercises for Programmers" by

I maintain the Node.js implementation of Livereload. It floors me how popular this thing still is. 34k weekly downloads. It's probably the most popular thing I've ever coded and it's used by a bunch of pretty cool projects. https://www.npmjs.com/package/livereload … Weird.

After two years of not using Facebook - I logged in today to check out this new tool that shows what Facebook has been tracking. Despite this, they have seen my every move on the Internet - this is creepier than I had imagined.https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2020/01/28/off-facebook-activity-page/ …

Can’t remember who it was but encountered a teacher whose mantra was: This is hard. You are smart. You can do this. Still use it myself when the opportunity arises.

People who use words like “easy” in educational material do it from a position of friendliness and helpfulness. But it has the opposite effect in many cases. It can make learners frustrated, which is the last thing you want.https://twitter.com/bphogan/status/1222284803053096961 …

Please. Please. Please look at your eduxational materials and strike all uses of “simple”, “easy”, “simply”, “obvious”, and “straightforward “ These don’t motivate learners. If it were easy or simple you wouldn’t have spent the tome to put a lesson together.

Kubernetes feels like something that happens when someone thinks, “This container stuff is too simple. How can we make it more convoluted and difficult?”

In the long run, the thing that sells books the most is word of mouth. This goes 10x for books that aren’t launched with big marketing or publicity support i.e. 95% of books. What I’m saying is, talk up the books you love, because their survival depends on it.
