Hey @YouTube! Why demonetise channels with less than 4000 hours watchtime/1000 subs to ‘protect your core values’? It’s the channels with 15,000,000+ subs that threaten your core values, yet you leave them alone. #YouTubePartnerProgram

I agree with you, but fwiw, they aren't leaving preferred partners alone. They will be watching and scrutinizing every piece of content they release, which is definitely more attention than sub <1k ppl

I want to believe that will be enough, but we already know the Suicide Forest video was checked by a human being at
@TeamYouTube who thought it was acceptable. How can we trust them to properly moderate their own content?1 reply 0 retweets 34 likes -
Oh really? I didn't know that! If they did actually review the video, that would certainly be troubling

I can’t imagine a video reaching Top Trending and coming from a Preferred Partner and YouTube going around and saying not a single employee has seen it.

It’s a very open secret that Trending is a playlist specifically curated by YouTube employees to maximise their profits from big Youtubers with big viewpoints

Secret or rumor though? AFAIK, they use algorithms to select that content. I know I have definitely seen "trending" stuff that is low in views and seems curated for me (relates to other content I've watched).

As far as I’m aware it’s mostly curated, although your point about vids relevant to you personally also sounds feasible. I’m fairly sure it’s more secret than rumour but I’m happy to be proven wrong

That would be my guess - that most of it is chosen by algorithm, with a handful that youtube personally selects. More often than not, these companies have found that their algorithms are better at finding things that people want to watch. Netflix is another great example!

They are, but they can also be dangerous. There’s a couple of stories of people being radicalised by algorithms E.g. people watching Sargon out of curiosity being recommended Richard Spencer, suddenly they’re down the white supremacist rabbit hole.

I'd argue that's the unfortunate Venn diagram of "recommendation engines" on the wrong side of the coin rather than Sargon being at fault, but yeah, it's an issue on the naive.
