For anyone to claim that crime is down in SF is mind boggling. Click the link our "DA" posted. Lots of crime is way up. To be proud and tweet about what this data shows is just something else. I would be ashamed of these numbers and resign immediately if I were him.https://twitter.com/chesaboudin/status/1316952744071188480 …

Fear mongering isn't helpful. The city is grappling with an unprecedented economic decline that has thrown countless people out of work and housing. What you see on the streets is that crisis. Let's stick to facts. Crime is down 23.6% this year. https://www.sanfranciscopolice.org/stay-safe/crime-data/crime-dashboard … https://twitter.com/Jason/status/1316784539381886976 …

the big change that gives @chesaboudin his claimed "win" is that larceny theft is down. That decrease is making up for the increases in homicides, burglaries, and auto thefts. what even is larceny theft and why would it be down year over year?

      Replying to @agarwal @chesaboudin

The increase in homicides as an absolute is quite low, and similar to other major cities across the country. Burglaries are up everywhere; let’s not pretend this is some unique SF problem. Meanwhile, the jail population has been reduced almost 40% and overall crime is down.

thank you for this. good to have the other perspective. i do wish Chesa tweet more info to give a deeper look into what he thinks success is. Agree homicides are an absolute low but the relative increase seems alarming. If burglaries are up everywhere, then lets just say that.

I would prefer for him to dig in a level and explain what's up, down, and how he/covid have affected that than a blanket statement of "crime is down" when that's not what I see. (i live in the inner sunset. no increase crime here. but downtown and even hayes crime seems to be up)

I don’t see how anyone can reasonably lay the blame for these stats at policies that have been in place less than a year which are arriving in the middle of an economic crisis; or lay blame without looking at the national context.

you're 100% right. i'm trying to learn here. on the flip side I see news articles about crimes in SF where people are arrested and then let go because the DA won't prosecute. Drug dealers are arrested monthly and released. That does seem new with this DA but i could be wrong.

To be fair sf’s DAs have a long history of not prosecuting. What annoys me more is the discussion of paying the deductibles for your broken car window, or store window.
