Reza Shah Pahlavi banned Iranian women from wearing a headscarf in 1937. This contributed to the resentments that exploded in 1978. Khomeini required women to wear a headscarf in 1979. Resentments have been brewing ever since. They will contribute to the theocracy's demise.

The use of the term "farib-khorde" ("the seduced") in reference to the arrested women is, in itself, interesting. In my memory - my vernacular is not as good as it was - the Persian term used to refer to women who were caught having sex outside marriage ...
