Callig it a "popular, mainstream debate" is maybe a bit of a misrepresentation. It's not like there are communist parties in any German federal or state parliament. In academia and newspapers, radio, blogs it is debated, of course. And why not? Almost everything is debated there.

It’s mainstream in the ruling SPD, and in the biggest position party (in the polls) the Greens, as well as in the Left Party. The latter two have also enacted laws to intervene in the market, for instance in Berlin.
