As someone who has spent wayyyyy too many hours on the "simple" process of trying to make a jump good, I second this statement.

Simple, go into options and make sure "physics" and "gravity" are set to "on" There you have it, a perfectly weighty jump with the right height, horizontal drift, aerial maneuverability, speed, and landing. All these problems were already solved.

I don't program games (I program software because I like getting paid and having decent working conditions) and I can say that the experience is the same.
