Is this 100% Rust macros? No compiler plugins and other such funny business? If so, I wonder if the Rust devs specifically ensured that HTML syntax is handled fine by the Rust parser.
It's a procedural macro. It operates at the tokeniser level, so the Rust parser only sees what comes out of the macro, not what goes in. It still has to be a valid Rust token stream, hence the need to quote text nodes to preserve whitespace etc, but syntax isn't happening yet.
Are proc macros the same as reader macros in Lisp?
I'm not sure the idea really translates, but it's pretty close.
The quoted text nodes are a bit of a shame. Do you see a way around that in the future? Perhaps a pre-processing plugin that surrounds text nodes in quotes, and presumably turns literal quotes into entities?
The Rust tokeniser doesn't record whitespace, and the macro's input is a token stream. No way around it that wouldn't have tons of unexpected behaviour.
