If nuclear plant retirements are accompanied by increases in "Environmentally Beneficial Electrification," then we would still see total emissions reduced even as emissions from electricity generation increase. Electric Vehicles and Heat Pumps are critically important!

Although this has not happened anywhere in the world, would require massive overbuild of renewables and would need a lot of storage, probably pumped hydro. Batteries are not currently a realistic option for 10s of GW hours storage right now.

Why frame this as an either/or, when electrification AND preserving huge amounts of zero-carbon nuclear would produce even better emissions outcomes? We’re too far behind our targets to waste clean resources.
