The spacy problems they throw at the crew seem manufactured. A well designed spacecraft would be designed so that the most obvious points of failure were serviceable by the crew.
Any device, whose routine repair requires manipulation of 4,000 components, should be sunk in the ocean as a boat anchor not shot into space as a critical life support system...
