Instead of going out of business, local newspapers should become branches of national papers. They'd give up most expenses and focus on journalism. Compensation would be based on article readership. Local coverage would draw readers to the national and vice versa.
That sounds like the right idea but with lousy execution and much value lost in the process. The fact that people do something wrong doesn't make it a bad idea
