Instead of going out of business, local newspapers should become branches of national papers. They'd give up most expenses and focus on journalism. Compensation would be based on article readership. Local coverage would draw readers to the national and vice versa.

That's what you have with any local paper owned by Gannett News - and there's a ton of them. After GN buys a paper, they cut local staff and the paper becomes three local articles and the rest is basically regurgitated USA Today.
That sounds like the right idea but with lousy execution and much value lost in the process. The fact that people do something wrong doesn't make it a bad idea
