An EV cash for clunkers program would be expensive, difficult, and as we show in a forthcoming paper, required if you want to decarbonize the vehicle fleet in the next 20 years. So, let’s go.

Only viable way to speed this up without tons of money is wildly compelling products. Elon figured this out years ago. I suspect this will happen much quicker than most think though, Tony Seba has a compelling argument for it.

To answer this directly, Buckminster Fuller put it better than I can: “You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” What does that look like?

Today's model has travellers pay the cost of transportation. But, their destinations benefit from that travel. Perhaps, we should shift the cost burden from travellers to destinations. (i.e. employers, shops, venues, etc.)
