I am not a financial expert, but given how low interest rates already are, can the Fed really do enough to offset a major recession event brought on by the virus? I know that a lot of businesses are probably sitting on a lot of cash to see it through, but that's not most of us.

It is not obvious that propping up the stock market by lowering rates will solve a real problem for the majority of Americans. Corporations have a great deal of cash on their books and aren't looking to borrow. This "recession" isn't the result of addressable financial factors.
