Of course our HVAC system needs a software update because the manufacturer found a bug after techs were fighting it for months. Of course.

Update: turns out our local contractor has been lying (not sure on purpose?), but I called the manufacturer and made my way to the developers responsible. They're still debugging. I let on that I was halfway technical and now they want me to collect Modbus traffic to help. GREAT

Yay, I've got working Modbus control now! Also I didn't have to do much work, given all the
#golang packages already existing: https://godoc.org/?q=modbus ... I just picked the top one and it mostly worked. And looks like I might be able to detect the bug condition and power cycle.2 replies 0 retweets 19 likesShow this thread -
Yay: the manufacturer sent me their internal docs w/ all the register specs. Boo: the file (named "NewRS485Address-20170119-CX34UsedV2latest") is half Chinese, half English and sometimes the English docs are correct and sometimes Chinese is correct. Better than no docs, tho!

I sent a bunch of logs & graphs to the HVAC company in Virginia or somewhere and they now have a 2nd customer seeing same & they've tentatively root caused it to a change in power supply but they can't confirm until people in China return to work, but..
#coronavirus. So, yeah.pic.twitter.com/GoWkPl8154

Good software is essential to the proper operation of HVAC equipment (The source of 30+% of GHG emissions in the Northeast) but the manufacturers' software capabilities are ridiculously poor. Also, except for geothermal heat pumps, virtually no one logs and analyzes performance!
