I know the story is that the UK government is failing apart, but I'm a bit jealous to be honest. Seems unthinkable that 20 US Congress Reps would say "this thing is wrong for the country" and get kicked out of the party for it. It seems like the way politics should work.

Strong parties are anathema to democracy. They shift the business of policy making from elected legislators to party officials. Strong parties also lead to polarization and majority rule which the US Constitution was designed to prevent. Read Madison's Federalist 10.
