The voting machines @DCLogan wants LA to use are hackable. We have proof - now you have proof too. Ignoring the facts makes you negligent. Please listen. #HandMarkedPaperBallots are not & they are cheaper & faster than hackable electronic voting machines.https://twitter.com/votingvillagedc/status/1160663776884154369?s=21 …

That’s a wrap! Thank you everyone who attended the #VotingVillage2019. Here’s some things our attendees discovered this year. Please look forward to our full report in the fall and special thanks to our hackers and scribes for all their hard work. pic.twitter.com/pH4W8JiJrq

None of the systems or devices at DEFCON and listed here are in use or proposed for use in #LACounty. The issues in the graphic do not apply to the #VSAP system or model. Our IT Security team was at DEFCON, attending sessions and actively participated. Please do not misrepresent.

Which raises the important question: Why didn't they bring your systems to be tested at DEFCON? As a follow up, are you going to take Harri up on his offer to help test your system?https://twitter.com/FilmsForChange/status/1164905550443716610?s=09 …

Great, if you’re open and transparent, it sounds like you’ll be inviting a public hack-a-thon with @HarriHursti and @jhalderm Please arrange ASAP so there is time to fix all the problems they may find. @LuluFriesdat @jennycohn1 @latimes @secureourvotes @VerifiedVoting

#DEFCON @VotingVillageDC Voting Machine Hacking Village is “security testing”. It is an educational event for people to learn about #ElectionSecurity and discover. It is not any way an organized security research or testing. It is only 2.5 days and all discoveries are accidental.

Right. But it still would have been a good way to do a "test run" of these brand new systems. Seems smarter than waiting for primary day on March 3! This otherwise good idea is quickly devolving into a VERY disturbing sitch. Hope Dean turns this around quickly.

IHMO; Better way would be an independent security review, a mini "California Top To Bottom". Organized, albeit still lightweight review of the system: software, hardware, deployment & opssec + procedures. Find if there are weaknesses and develop an immediate mitigation strategy.

Appreciate your recommendation and comments. Robust testing aligned to what you reference is underway as part of -- and independent of -- certification. Much of this thread misses that this is an in-process development/deployment; very different from traditional commercial model.

I’m curious, @DCLogan why so many of your claims are not backed up by engineering documents. You make fun every time I ask” “Where is the documentation for your claims?”; but the fact remains that your only response is to point to testimonials, PSAs, and softball press coverage.

As noted in prior responses, the certification of voting systems in CA requires full disclosure of engineering designs, code review, testing results, etc. When that process is complete, reports aligned to the State's certifications and conditions of use will be available.

Dean, where is the source code? Note the OSI concerns from 2018. Is this open source, or not open source? https://opensource.org/node/944

Inspecting voting.source code is a waste of time since you can't prove that the inspected software is the same as that installed in the machine or that it is the only software running.

The latter is of course true. However, it isn't a complete waste of time. It allows a vendor to demonstrate they are using good coding practices in at least the code base they say they are using. If they can't do at least that, there are major problems.
