Put this another way, looking at just the app stores (Apple and Google Play), they’re $18B/quarter, and they strictly software vs. an Apple quarter which is a mix of hardware and software. So just the app stores are 3x the size of the entire software industry from 1987.

At its peak in the 1980's, Digital Equipment Corporation was the second largest computer company in the world and one of the USA's most profitable companies. I think their maximum annual revenue was about $14 billion....
