"Payback period" analysis typically ignores the value of benefits that accrue over long periods or the value of long-lived assets. For instance, the bore holes of a geothermal heat pump will bring value for 50 to 100 years. But, that isn't relevant when computing payback period.

Two alternatives may have the same "payback period," but one will have a lifetime of 15 years while the other will have a lifetime of 25 years. As far as payback is concerned, the two choices are equal. That is just stupid.
