Kevin, I see this kind of argument every day. Gas folk always ignore Geothermal HP since they know they can't beat it. They focus on Air-Source since it is an easy target. Heck, gas is cleaner than burning coal or dung. But, that doesn't mean it is better than GHP.

I LOVE geothermal heat pumps. Tried to put on my home, but capex was huge. Went hi-Eff (12 years ago) & enjoyed great savings til gas prices cratered.

Air to ground a lot easier in new Construction, esp if you have land, and in far north under deep C constraint will also compete.
