The major themes here are HVAC contractors are not equipped to do design or commissioning in-house and are not capable of consistently executing tight ducts, insulators are paid by the square foot, and the raters are paid by the builders, the providers are paid by the raters.

@healthyheating@bobwyman I second the thoughts here. No real design or QC. Moral hazard all over the place. Homeowners need to pay Raters directly. Raters/HVAC contractors/Insulation contractors need to be rated on energy performance. Sadly Sam Raskin said not possible.3 replies 0 retweets 3 likes -

By the way, we are building a platform that does this. 12-18 months out. FYI We work with a local builder who has 2 homes under 1 ACH50 with well designed and installed HVAC systems.

It still kills me
@GronasTerje that you didn’t get anything extra for your home. That. Must. Change. It’s capital destruction, wasted money. Won’t scale without a fix. Again, our calculator aims to fix it. Everyone on this thread should try it. http://bit.ly/EUIonNtHW3 replies 1 retweet 4 likes -

The only way it EVER changes is when owners/buyers demand something other than the cheapest price and contractors are held responsible for not delivering

Part of the problem here - and likely most places - is that homeowners have no idea they need to worry about it. They assume that a home built by a professional builder, insulated by a pro insulation contractor, and heated & cooled by a pro HVAC contractor will be “done right!”

Could transparency and accountability be the key here? Who knows if a house is properly done? Terje cut his Energy Use Intensity in HALF when he replaced his HVAC. Same shell. Shine a light on Performance... PS
@lloydalter there is a piece in this thread.3 replies 0 retweets 3 likes -

I thought Energy Star was dead or on life support anyway, defunded by Trump and EPA. The goal of the current government is to burn more fossil fuels, not less.

Trump is not "the government." Here in New York State and City, our governments are working to reduce fossil fuel consumption. #BeneficialElectrification
