I wonder: to what extent 5G improvements in capacity and data transfer speed are washed out by increasing device and data use. I.e., are the networks just managing to tread water? What would happen to today's usage if we tried to run it all on 4G?

It's a good question, but the capacity increases from mid-band are so large that I think they more than make up for the increased usage. The fact that the carriers are going so strongly in on FWA (which uses a ton of bandwidth) clearly demonstrates that in my mind.
