If you want complete control of color, trapping. How the ink gets distributed. Keeping your black line black. The best way to do that is via those CMYK sliders. (If it’s conventional offset printing.)

Real talk. If you work in print. If you work in comics. You work in CMYK.

Why does The Wind Waker's Cel Shading still look so modern, even while so many other games barely hold up? Let's find out.

Another thing I love about this: A good designer knows the history of the medium. They turn to what they acknowledge worked in earlier designs. In creating a new cartoon villain, study up on cartoon villains! Take from the recipe and add/subtract some ingredients to solve it.

You know, 'Circus Owner' is a bit ambiguous. Especially in translation. He could've been referring to Stromboli for Wario, too. He and the Coachman both fit. Big eyebrows, big mouths. Big teeth. Big noses.

The reason I love this stuff? These beloved characters were birthed by living breathing artists who had influences and a vision! They made design decisions, put pencil to paper. Characters like Wario and Bowser are the products of a playful mind going to work—solving a problem.

UPDATE to the original post: Kotabe didn't work on Wind Waker after all. "I often hear that, but I had nothing to do with that game!" more in this translated interview:

Stunning stunning bit of info. I LOVE IT. No wonder that nose is so big and pink.

"Really, what happened is that I worked on the movie 'The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon' when I was at Toei and, to give a very 'Japanese' feeling to the drawings, we were inspired by haniwa sculptures. I strongly suspect the Wind Waker team saw that movie."

BINGO: Are you responsible for the unique art style of The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker? "I often hear that, but I had nothing to do with that game!"

"I also helped define Wario's design. His creators had in mind an evil twin of Mario, so I drew him with Bluto (Popeye's nemesis) in mind, as well as the circus owner in Pinocchio, to highlight his evil nature." I mean, WOW. Wario's DNA relatives, right here👇

Re: re-designing Bowser for Mario 3 "He still looked like a hippo to me. So I took inspiration from the most aggressive turtle I knew, the Chinese soft-shell turtle, to redesign and make him look truly mean."

"I was asked to draw the cover to Super Mario Bros. 3. I had asked Mario's creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, what his personality was like: He told me "Do what you want but Mario doesn't kill." 😳💀
