Solo is Star Wars reference bingo. Hey remember these dice? Hey remember this catch phrase? Hey remember the falcon? Hey remember the kessle run? Hey remember lando? Instead of letting those just be elements that just exist in the universe, it's using them as a focus/crutch.

The best way to do that is to set up the reference (without mentioning it), then connect the dot after the fact. Usually redefining the meaning of the original reference. In Solo, it’s like “spice mines, Kessel run, Millenium Falcon card game, 12 parsecs” yadda yadda

Isn’t referencing the main movies kind of the entire point of Solo, and all these other spinoffs? I enjoyed it

Look at Rogue One - manages to tell an original story without the references feeling forced - just enough to be connected to other movies, but still allowing the movie to standalone. Star Wars: iPhone Solo: Lightning EarPods (unusable without iP) Rogue: AirPods (iP not crucial)
