Mining pools are based on the premise that guaranteed small payouts are preferable to large but uncertain payouts. is based on the opposite premise which is... strange but I admit it offers a more exciting life than my savings account can.

So many attacks boil down to incorrect threat models: The original mimblewimble paper promised an obscured transaction graph but only considered attackers who inspect blocks after they have been built. Real attackers can do much more than that!

Blockchains are so nascent that some teams are /still/ choosing to roll their own. Aragon Chain will be exploitable by anyone willing to spend 1/3 of their market cap (talk about a hostile takeover!) but they still think this is the best option, and it just might be!

Late last night, for what I think is the first time ever, three different clients finalized some epochs in an testnet! , , and were each validating blocks, and together they finalized 12 epochs before things started falling apart.

So we (humanity) trained a model and found that it was shockingly smart along a human axis. When we looked into why it turns out that no, it wasn't actually smart along that axis (whew), it was just so smart along a non-human axis that it passed the test anyway. Pretty scary!

This is a pretty great thread on what it means to be an intermediary, and some examples of such.

Most apps fail in ridiculous ways when the network drops, and the ones which can handle being offline often fail when the network is slow or spotty. Can you imagine an entire generation of apps which Just Work in the subway? That's the promise of Braid!

HTML/CSS is neat but how much power does separating content from style really give you? Not knocking it, it's great for accessibility, but separating UI from state is a much bigger win! Being able to remix data from anywhere was a big part of the hyperlinking and Web 2.0 visions.

Braid is pretty exciting! It's definitely not finished but it's a first step in an amazing direction:

Great quote, and the rest of this video is pretty good too. Just after this he explains why asking-for-data-by-hash-a-la-IPFS isn't great: you can only ask for things which already exist! There's no way to IPFS some Google query; the hash doesn't exist until the query runs!

I'm excited that this is finally happening! I'm trying to check my enthusiasm, Java used to promise this too, but we might finally Write Once, Run Everywhere.

Before gmail will accept your AMP emails you have to register and wait for approval. What.... happened... to the open web? Has Google completely given up on that? Is there any way for me, just a single interested developer, to send amp emails to friends?

PostScript pushed code into printers for performance, eBPF pushes code into the kernel, for performance the web pushes code into clients, also for performance Stadia will pull that code back into the server... for performance? What does Google know about 5G that we don't?

Visited this weekend and I think I'm in love. They've picked a direction and they're charting it out as far as they can go. Can't wait to see the next version and the world where we talk to each other and compute together with our hands instead of laptops.

Another great post by Nadia Eghbal: Developer time / energy is scarce while software copies are abundant. Open source funding usually focuses on the latter (fancy licensing) but focusing on the former might be more productive.

I love this guy's writing and his new post is a great story about abstraction: if you don't really need the power of abelian groups you can move to the simpler interface monoids provide; this allows the infrastructure to take some shortcuts and now your code runs faster.
