This is Dries’ epic post on open source, framed as Makers and Takers. As both a long time project lead of Drupal and founder of a commercial business around Drupal, he has a lot of insight into the shape of the issues.https://twitter.com/Dries/status/1174701921682317312 …

A key framing for me was
@Dries’ explanation of open source as both a public good (usage of software doesn’t take away from others) and common good (a customer typically only pays one vendor related to an open source project)1 reply 0 retweets 3 likesShow this thread -
The OSS discussion is fast moving:
@dries uses the “sustainability” label, which@feross covered: “We should set our goals higher than subsistence. Folks who work on open source have a right to thrive and to be fairly compensated for our labor.”https://feross.org/funding-experiment-recap/ …1 reply 0 retweets 3 likesShow this thread -
A lot of
@dries suggestions are about raising the visibility of open source benefits and needs. In other words, social change: can we appeal to the “fairness principles” of organizations, and have them embed open source contributions into the way they do business.2 replies 0 retweets 3 likesShow this thread -
I have been inspired by
@LicenseZero and other licensing changes and believe license innovation is a tool.@dries suggests a CLA to aid in future re-licensing: “At some point, current Open Source licenses will be at a disadvantage compared to future Open Source licenses.”2 replies 1 retweet 3 likesShow this thread -
That last point is important: the owner of the CLA has ultimate power. Can shared ownership models be created where all contributors can own the CLA and associated rights? I got stuck with
@adamhjk in thinking about this before. Shared ownership fixes this issue.1 reply 0 retweets 0 likesShow this thread -
Much like setting up a foundation, shared ownership of a CLA has high overhead to setup. As various Virtual and IRL organizations and platforms get easier to automate, we might get there. Experiments needed!

I’m pleased that we are starting a new phase of discussion around open source.
We also need to include other points in the discussion. Here’s a great set of them from @sarahmeihttps://twitter.com/sarahmei/status/1174907725853052929 …

Want to continue the discussion, both virtually and in your geographic area? I organized
#BOSS19, the Berlin Open Source Salon, to be a meeting place for stuff like this. Would love to see more salons happen everywhere. Get in touch if that sounds interesting!0 replies 2 retweets 5 likesShow this threadThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
