The only thing worse than finding a huge pumpkin spider in a pile of clean laundry is losing a giant pumpkin spider in a pile of clean laundry. I may wear the same clothes for the rest of the week.

So, the college's club hockey team is playing a Canadian school tomorrow. The dean was asked by the athletic director if we had any Canadian faculty or students who could sing their national anthem? We think it is 'God Save the Queen.'

What is a concrete step you will take today to help ensure Trump is defeated in November?

In fact low-mass stars can be ejected/escape from the cluster the same way low-mass molecules like hydrogen escape from the Earth's atmosphere!

At lower speeds, the more massive stars will be likely to be on orbits that take them to the edge of the cluster. Low-mass stars moving rapidly will get further out

You can think of this a little like thermal equilibrium - random interactions will tend to leave the stars with roughly the same kinetic energy the same way molecules a gas of uniform temperature have roughly the same kinetic energy so the heavy stars/molecules travel slower

I feel like you can see a little dynamical sorting - the higher mass (brighter) stars are concentrated more in the center of the cluster.

Setting up a NIH ERA Commons account and it's actually making me appreciate FastLane in that while FastLane is incredibly terrible, I understand enough of its hideous quirks to be able to work with it, whereas for ERA I'm having to learn a whole new set of quirks.

The NASEM and United Airlines were very kind about changing tickets and colleagues/friends on the panel I was on were also very kind and supportive about how distracted I was as on the meeting days.

(Reasons for cutting the trip short are less good - older dog had sharply worse health problems and I didn't want to be away or to leave spouse to have to do deal with all of it alone.)

OK, so after 15 minutes in my office now someone knows I'm here and I have two meetings in the next two days. But still ahead of the curve.

I had to cut a trip (extended astro2020 meeting) short and come back early so I have two days with (almost) no meetings or telecons or classes and I'm sitting in my office and almost no-one knows I'm here and it's like a holiday.

Solar AO is amazing. My favorite triva is that rather than using a bright star in the dark sky as a reference beacon, they use a black sunspot contrasting against the bright sun. So rather than measuring the wavefront of light their measuring the wavefront of darkness.

From the press release, the angular resolution is about 0.04", basically the diffraction limit for a 4-m telescope. You can see a little degradation in image quality at the edges but overall it's a stunning image for daytime. The AO system and team on DKIST are incredible.

Many, many years of watching the temperature graph move inexorably towards the dew point and hence the ruination of a nights work have burned the definition into my brain. But I still sometimes get Type 1 and Type 2 supernovae confused.

(And we won’t get into the way in which special and general relativity were a (brilliant) outgrowth of a widespread movement thinking about these issues, hence their rapid adoption as a - pardon the word - consensus)
