I've had two demotions though, CTO -> Chief Architect -> Principal Architect, but both came with an increase in pay.

As CTO/founder, my salary was $0, when we were acquired it became non-zero. Then we were acquired again. Other two jobs were 4 years and 7 years respectively without a promotion.

Once a supervisor told me that something good may happen to me. He was out after 3 months and I was asked to get higher position (by his recommendation). I didn't take the chance ;)
