My lab's first preprint on bioRxiv demonstrating how SynGAP1 splice variants and liquid-liquid phase transtions regulate dendritic developement and synaptic plasticity. Has intesrresting basic biology findings and relevance to SynGAP1 related disorders.

Cues that predict reward activate dopamine neurons but the function of this response remained unclear. This study demonstrates that inhibiting dopamine cue responses impairs second-order conditioning as predicted from TD learning theory. Elegant study!

New work from a really fun collaboration with and ! We recast many decision making models as instances of recurrent switching linear dynamical systems. Then we can fit these models to neural data more easily and generalize them in cool new ways!

Distributional reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms predict the entire ‘distribution’ of future rewards not just the average and improve the AI performance. This work presents evidence that the brain’s dopamine system uses distributional RL.

Is information in the brain limited by the amount of neurons? Nice summary from Jan on recent work. It was great to be a part of this experiment/theory collaboration (and the experiments were the easy part🙃). Check it out on bioArxiv:

Brains are amazing. Our lab demonstrates that single human layer 2/3 neurons can compute the XOR operation. Never seen before in any neuron in any other species. Out now in . Congrats Albert, Tim  & CO

Several years ago I met with Adam Young who had an ambitious plan with to profile microglia from over 100 neurosurgical patients. Glad to contribute to their impressive study identifying novel microglia signatures in the diseased brain.
