The rate of decay of the Fourier coefficients is controlled by the smoothness of the original function: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourier_series#Derivative_property … In particular, the original curve is "smooth" (has derivatives of all orders), if and only if the Fourier coefficients decay faster than any power law!
