My DLA implementation is very fast this time around. I should probably write up how it works, because I think most people implement it in a very slow, brute-force way. I can accumulate 1 million points in minutes.
A more run-of-the-mill example. There are 5 million "particles" in this one. Second image is a 100% view crop. Very fractal-like.pic.twitter.com/hAjk7wHER5
Viridis all the things.
The gist of it is shown in this diagram. The wandering red point can instantly jump to any point on the dotted circle. We just need a spatial index to give us the nearest point and thus the radius of the circle. Code is here, works in 2D and 3D! https://github.com/fogleman/dlaf pic.twitter.com/WXTITTHdj1
it's like a broken childrens toy compared to this, but i couldn't help but reimplement in observablehttps://beta.observablehq.com/@tmcw/diffusion-limited-aggregation …
Here's a fork that includes a "dlaf"-inspired algorithm and also explores the attaching rules from a cellular automata-inspired point of view: https://beta.observablehq.com/@bryangingechen/dla-ca-rules … Basically, particles can only attach if the numbers of neighbors of various types satisfy certain conditions.
Here're some examples of the shapes you can get by changing the rules while the cluster grows. The pink-looking one exhibits 4 different rules!pic.twitter.com/1AFCwIvQUk
